What should you see at Myra?

Myra Ancient City is known for its rock-cut tombs and its place in Lycian history. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism describes Myra as a capital of the Lycian civilization and one of the Lycian Confederation’s six important cities, with three votes.
The Myros River, now called the Demre Çayı, gave the city its name. Alluvial deposits from the river contributed to Myra’s decline. The city also remained known through the Middle Ages, in part because Saint Nicholas served as its bishop.
Start your visit with the ancient city and its tombs, then consider the other Demre sites if you have time. Their distinct histories make them additions to the day rather than substitutes for Myra.
Which stops can you add in Demre?

Demre has two notable additions: the St. Nicholas Memorial Museum and the Lycian Civilizations Museum at Andriake. The first is a church built in honor of Saint Nicholas, bishop of Myra; the second occupies Myra’s ancient harbor quarter in the Çayağzı area.
Andriake served as the region’s third most important harbor after Phaselis and Patara. Its address is Büyükkum Mahallesi. The St. Nicholas Memorial Museum is at Gökyazı Mahallesi, Müze Caddesi, and offers an audio-guide service.
If you want to keep the day focused, visit Myra first and choose one additional stop. For a longer visit, check each site’s hours before setting the order, since Andriake closes earlier than the other two.
